A: Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. He was influenced by many forms of exercise including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. When Joseph Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s he opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method. Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes.
Q: Who will benefit from Pilates ?
A: Everybody! Young or old, including those with:
Postural problems
Back pain
Osteoporosis
Stress-related conditions
Asthma
Preoperative strengthening prior to knee or hip replacement
Postoperative recovery for knee/hip replacement
It can also help athletes wanting to enhance their performance. There is no age limit for participating in Pilates.
Q: How often do I need to do Pilates ?
A: It is recommended that you do Pilates exercises at least twice a week. However, even one class a week is better than none at all and I will always encourage you to do some “maintenance” exercises, especially if you are using Pilates to help with your rehabilitation.
Q: How do I start ?
A: The best way to start is by giving me a call or contacting me. I can then answer any questions you have directly. If you want to proceed, I will post or email you an enrolment form here. The enrolment form asks questions about your medical history, current health and fitness levels.
Q: Do I need individual sessions or group classes ?
A: Everyone starting Pilates training should come first for an individual session so that I can make an assessment of your needs. This will help determine whether you would best be suited to private individual lessons or a group class and what level of class would be most appropriate. Sometimes it may be beneficial to start with a few private sessions before you join a class. I assess you as an individual and your safety and well-being are my top priorities.
Q: Why is Pilates so popular ?
A: The simple answer is because it works and is endorsed by physiotherapists, osteopaths and doctors. Many top athletes and celebrities practice Pilates as an element of their fitness regimes.
Q: What Should I Wear To A Pilates Class ?
A: You should wear something comfortable that does not restrict movement without being too baggy. Leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt is ideal.
Q: Do I need to do anything special before a class ?
A: You should avoid eating a heavy meal and alcohol immediately prior to a class. You should not participate if you are feeling unwell. Painkillers can mask the signs of pain so you may wish to avoid taking them before a class.
Q: Do I need to have medical approval for before starting Pilates ?
A: Although I will undertake an assessment before you start, it would be advisable for you to consult your doctor prior to starting Pilates if you are on medication or have any illness or injuries that you feel may be affected by exercise.
